When I was young, my parents had a number of multi-family rental properties. Once I was able to drive I helped with all the various parts of maintenance and management.
Then, in 2011, the lease for my apartment was coming to an end. My older sister encouraged me to look into buying a home so I could start building equity. I didn’t even know where to begin. My sister helped me find a mortgage broker so I could be pre-approved for an amount that would narrow down the properties I wanted to take a look at. Finding a realtor was the next step in the process.
Honestly, this wasn’t the the greatest experience. I ended up switching realtors and still wasn’t happy with who I ended up with. Despite that, at 21 years young, I proudly bought my first home!!! This felt like the biggest accomplishment.
A few years later, I met the guy I’d later marry and we slowly made renovations room by room to my home and as the weather warmed up, we made improvements on the landscape. This is when I realized how significant the impact of curb appeal can be! All of the changes we made increased the property value substantially, and the equity gained from that property launched us into the investment property business.
My husband and I, together, enjoy renovating the homes we’ve purchased. There is something so fulfilling about taking a distressed home and making it functional and restoring its beauty. We’ve now renovated five different homes and are currently in the process of closing on our seventh rental unit.
Outside of real estate, I love to go biking with our wild and hilarious toddler. I also have two small dogs that I love to bring to dog parks when the weather allows. On summer days, you can often find us cruisin’ through Minnehaha dog park.
Over the last few years I’ve really taken to camping. With winters so cold, I really try to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather as much as I can before winter settles in again.
