It was 10 o’clock at night, and my sister (who rented from me at the time) and I were sitting on the kitchen counter talking “life”. I was preaching to her about how she needs to follow her dreams, live life to the fullest and walk the walk! She turned to me and said “So, why haven’t you gotten your real estate license yet”? It hit me just then, I was not practicing what I was preaching!
One week later I had enrolled in real estate school and was on my way to following my dreams!
Real estate had always caught my eye; if I was driving through my in-laws neighborhood or on my way to work, I would notice the, “For Sale” signs and think “Man, I bet I could turn that place around!”
Rewind to a few years before getting my license; I was living with my husband in his parents’ house saving for a down payment on our first fixer-upper. After a few months we were on the hunt for our first purchase. Things didn’t go according to plan, but does it ever? The agent that we worked with wasn’t up to my speed. I would want to see houses the moment they came on the market, she wanted to wait for the weekend. I would go and scope out the house on my own, then call her and let her know if I wanted to write an offer or wait to see it on the weekend. Not the way things should have been done.
It took a few months of searching, but I finally found the right fixer upper for us! It was an adorably ugly ramble in the city. It needed work, lots of people said “Run!” from this house, but I saw what it could be, not what it was. We put in an offer, and moved in 45 days later. It was ours!
We lived in the house while fixing things up; we painted the house top to bottom, installed new siding, painted all the cabinetry throughout the house and laid new kitchen tile. After all was said and done we knew it was time to sell and move on to our next project!
We purchased our second property outside of the city, to try something new! Along with trying a new city, we found out that we were going to be parents! Fast forward two years we are now living in our next project while raising a very spunky toddler. Living both in the city and out of the city have opened my eyes to all that Minnesota has to offer!
Through my experiences in real estate I have learned that time is of the essence, there is usually more than meets the eye in the property and relationships with your agent can make or break your experience.
My strong attention to detail and willingness to go above and beyond for my clients will enhance their experience when making one of the largest purchases of their life. My approach to helping my clients find the right property for them is listening; taking in what the client is saying, and guiding them to their dream purchase, whether that be a fixer upper, rental, their first home or their next home.
